Who is a Dental Implants Candidate?

A dental implant is a prosthetic that takes the place of a missing tooth root and provides a solid and stable foundation for an artificial tooth crown. It is a minimally-invasive and the most effective, realistic-looking, and comfortable option for the replacement of a missing tooth. At Serenity Dental, we can restore your teeth with the help of a dental implant.

Who are Good Candidates for Dental Implants?

Most people are good candidates for dental implants as long as they have good oral health and overall health.

•  They should be over 17 years of age: Dental implants are not advisable for younger people as their jaw is still developing. However, people who are over the age of 17 are good candidates for implants.
•  Good gum health: It is important that you do not have any periodontal disease when you are undergoing dental implant surgery. If you have active gum disease, you need to first treat the infection to reduce the risk of gum recession and jawbone infection that can result in implant failure.
•  Good oral hygiene: People who want dental implants should also be in the habit of exercising good oral hygiene, including brushing twice a day, using dental floss daily, and maintaining their six-monthly dental checkups. Dental health is very good for implant success.
•  Good Bone Density: The jaw forms the foundation on which the implant will be placed. If the bone in this area is weak and brittle, your implant can shift out of place, cause inflammation and infection of the jaw, and result in implant failure. That is why we recommend a bone grafting procedure if your jawbone density is low.
•  Patience: Dental implant treatment is a long treatment. Depending on various factors, it can take anywhere between six months to over a year to finish. That is why you need to exercise patience if you want this process to finish quickly.

Medical Issues That Can Pose Risks For Dental Implant Patients

When you decide to have a dental implant treatment, Dr. Welton will consider your medical records and ensure you do not have any medical conditions or other issues that can result in complications during the surgery. These conditions include:
•  Conditions that result in significant immune deficiencies.
•  Untreated gum disease/ chronic periodontitis.
•  Cancer that requires radiotherapy or chemotherapy treatment.
•  Uncontrolled diabetes.
•  Hemophilia and other blood disorders that prevent clotting.
•  Connective tissue disorders, including bone disorders like arthritis.

Even if you have these medical conditions, you may still be a candidate for dental implant if you can determine the extent and severity of the condition and take measures to treat them. You will need to make a treatment plan with your physician to improve your overall health so that you can become eligible for a dental implant surgery.

Beyond these medical conditions, there are other factors that can interfere with your ability to have implants:
•  Pregnancy: It is advisable that expectant mothers wait after they have given birth to have their dental implant surgery. Pregnancy and hormonal changes and the implant surgery can result in undue stress for the mother, which is not good for her and the baby’s health.
•  Alcoholism: People who consume alcohol excessively may suffer from several complications during dental implants, including failure of the implant to fuse the jawbone, dry mouth, increased discomfort and risk of clots in the jaw. This can lead to implant failure.
•  Smoking: People who are heavy smokers are also not good candidates for dental implants as smoking interferes with osseointegration and creates fibrous tissues instead of strong and hard bone in the jaw.
•  Teeth Clenching: If you have a habit of clenching your teeth or if you suffer from bruxism, it can put too much pressure on your dental implants, which can lead to implant failure.

However, it is still possible for you to get dental implants if you get appropriate treatment for these habits. Pregnant women, of course, can get a dental implant until after they have had the baby.

Dental implants are almost indistinguishable from natural teeth due to their perfect form, increased comfort, and improved functionality. They also have a very high success rate at up to 98% and can last you a lifetime.
