At Serenity Dental, we perform a root canal procedure to save a tooth that is badly damaged or infected. During a root canal, the nerve and pulp are removed, and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed. On the other hand, without treatment, the tissue surrounding the tooth will become infected and an abscess may form. This can cause pain, swelling, and even bone loss in the jaw.
A root canal procedure is recommended when the nerve of a tooth becomes infected or if the tooth is severely damaged and cannot be fixed with a filling or other treatment. And because an infected or injured nerve won’t heal independently, it should be removed through a root canal. This is because, if left untreated, an infection of the nerves can result in an abscessed tooth, a much more severe condition that requires more extensive treatment to repair. An abscessed tooth can also cause damage to the jawbone and surrounding teeth, making extraction necessary. An infection can also lead to other health problems like heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. This is why treating any dental condition as soon as possible is essential to avoid further complications.
To perform a root canal, our dentist will numb the area and recommend sedation if the patient experiences anxiety. Then, a small opening is made in the tooth to reach the soft pulp inside. Our dentist will remove the pulp and clean the inside of the tooth so it can be sealed with a rubber compound called gutta-percha. After the canals have been filled, a temporary filling is placed over the tooth to keep it protected until your next appointment.
On your second visit, the temporary filling will be removed, and the permanent restoration will be cemented and polished. The crown is then placed back over your tooth to strengthen and protect it from future damage. You will probably need to return to our dentist’s office several times to ensure your crown fits appropriately before it is permanently bonded. Once your final crown is in place, you should follow all aftercare instructions provided by our dentist to prevent future complications.
A root canal is a safe and effective treatment for infected or damaged teeth. Root canal therapy restores the health of the tooth and prevents the need for tooth extraction in the future. Patients can often return to their routine shortly after the procedure.
